In May 2009 three members of BCITP Net Leadership Roundtable (Rodolfo, Armeni and Olga) presented to the Board members of Immigrant Employment Council of British Columbia. The Immigrant Employment Council of BC (IEC-BC) is taking action to change hiring practices, policies and perceptions about immigrants. It is a multi-stakeholder collaboration between employers & business organizations, immigrant serving sector, unions, regulatory bodies and post-secondary educational institutions. It's goal is to connect more immigrants to employment that reflects their knowledge and experience.
BCITP Net members presented a summary of their activities in the last two years, including a research that has been conducted on their behalf by the Centre for Community Based Research. The purpose of the study was to identify the promising practices in other jurisdictions that has facilitated immigrant professionals to access employment. Among seven practices identified in the study BCITP Net decided to focus on one - Ontario Public Service Internship Program for Internationally Trained Professionals. Presenters and Board members had a fruitful discussion about applicability of the program in BC and potential partnership opportunities for BCITP Net and IEC BC.
