April 10, 2010 BCITP Net hosted a Dialogue between immigrant professionals at the 2nd Immigrant Professional Conference in BC Print
Saturday, 22 May 2010 08:57
On April 10, 2010 over 200 immigrant professionals attended the 2nd Immigrant Professionals Conference in BC. BCITP Net hosted a Dialogue session at the conference which was attended  by over 30 immigrant professionals. The session was facilitated by Olga Scherbina, Acting Chair of BCITP Net and co-facilitated by Leadership Roundtable members - Rodolfo, Luiz, Armeni and Meng. The goal of the session was two-fold: to provide information about BCITP Net role in the province and outline assistance that we provide to immigrant professional organizations in BC as well as to hear from immigrants about their vision for our organization.
For the last 5 years, BCITP Net was mostly an advocacy grou formed by three non-profit organizations serving immigrants and funded by the Government of Canada. In the year of 2009 our funding ended and we realized that we would like to move from an advocacy model to a more action-oriented group. Participants of the Dialogue session strongly supported our ideas of being more proactive and action oriented vs. just a 'talking group'. As a result of the Dialogue session, BCITP Net is currently hosting a number of face-to-face discussions with BC's immigrant professional organizations to create partnerships and work on the projects to enhance employment outcomes for skilled immigrant in BC.
During the session five  subgroups of participants emerged based on immigrant professional backgrounds. BCITP Net Leadership Roundtable members hosted five simultaneous 20-minute profession-specific discussions on the certification processes, network and job opportunities for engineers, admin & HR practitioners, doctors, IT and educational professionals.
