Ease the Transition with Distance-based Environmental Certificate
The lack of recognition of foreign credentials is a major barrier that faces immigrants during their transition into the Canadian labour market. Without Canadian education, many educated newcomers find themselves underemployed.
In response to this issue facing newcomers, the Canadian Centre for Environmental Education (CCEE) created the Certificate in Environmental Practice. This distance-based certificate can offer both potential immigrants and newcomers an opportunity to gain the skills and knowledge they need to find meaningful and rewarding environmental employment.
Why does the Certificate work for potential immigrants and newcomers?
- It is distance-based training which allows for the program to be scheduled around work and/or to be taken from abroad so that immigrants can arrive in Canada prepared
- It is relevant to industry - the program is based on industry standards so training meets the needs and demands of environmental employers
- Credits required to complete the certificate can potentially be awarded based on Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)
- Through Foreign Credential Recognition (FCR), a Canadian parchment can be earned by immigrants, helping to facilitate their entry into the Canadian environmental workforce - this addresses the non-recognition of credentials issue identified by many immigrants in ECO Canada's research
"I enrolled in the Certificate program because it's a powerful shortcut to landing at a suitable job and a reliable measure to evaluate new immigrants' skills." - Badrudeen Adekule, CEP Student and Newcomer, M.Sc. Microbiology, Kuwait
